Buccinator – The Great Painter Rafael

"While Buccinator never became anything like a known act, the background of its various participants makes it worthy of note to fans of L.A. art/punk rock of the '90s. Formed by vocalist/guitarist John Napier, having recently emerged from the collapse of Ethyl Meatplow, Buccinator roped in such folks as bassist Dave Gomez from Beck's backing group and drummer Amery Smith from the Beastie Boys' touring outfit. Add in Evan Mack to join Napier on guitar and various loud vocals and the result was an amusing trawl through aggressively noisy craziness, as documented on the band's one album, The Great Painter Rafael. Napier himself started the Basura! label to release Great Painter on, as well as a variety of other intriguing efforts from the likes of Congo Norvell and Milk Cult. For those wondering — the band's name itself refers to the muscle forming the cheek wall in humans."
